Bloemfontein, Free State - Three men were arrested in connection with the murders of an elderly Trompsburg couple on their farm, Free State police said on Monday.

“Two suspects were arrested after members of the K9 unit received information they were in Bloemfontein,” Captain Rulene Kuhn said.

Two men, both aged 27, were arrested in Bloemfontein on Monday, and a third man in Trompsburg. Two firearms allegedly taken from the murder scene were seized.

Johan, 70, and Cecile Fourie, 73, were last seen alive at about 2pm on Sunday after having lunch with their son in town. The couple did not answer their two-way radio during a daily security check, nor did they answer their home phone. Farm security investigated and found their bodies in a bedroom.

Police suspected their attackers gained entry to the house while they were gone and lay in wait for them. The house was in disarray, with traces of blood everywhere. The safe had been cut open with a grinder.

The three men would appear in the Trompsburg Magistrate's Court on Thursday. - Sapa
