Free State - Two mine workers were killed and two others injured in an underground explosion at a Harmony Gold mine in the Free State, the mine's management said on Thursday.

“Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited (Harmony) regrets to advise that two contracting employees died yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon, after an underground explosion occurred at its Joel mine near Theunissen,” the company said.

Two other workers were injured in the accident and they were both in a stable condition.

All drilling and blasting operations at the mine had been stopped until investigations to establish the cause of the explosion were completed.
