Welkom - The wife of a Welkom policeman killed near his office in November last year has been arrested in connection with his murder, Free State police said on Friday.

Police spokesman Captain Stephen Thakeng said members of the Hawks arrested Captain Mohanwe Mabaso’s wife after a breakthrough this week.

Mabaso’s body was found in a park near his office in St Helena, Welkom, while he was supposed to be on duty.

The 44-year-old officer had a stab wound to the neck, and injuries to both his knees and his head.

Thakeng said Nthabeleng Mabaso, 34, was charged with murder and appeared in the Welkom Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

The case was postponed until May 31 for a bail application.

Thakeng said the investigation into the murder would continue and more arrests were expected. - Sapa
