Bloemfontein - A Free State woman who was injured nearly a year ago during a protest in the Clocolan district has died, and her alleged attacker will now face a murder charge, Beeld reported on Wednesday.

Farmer's wife Isabel Hugo, 67, was driving past a protesting crowd in August last year when her alleged attacker, Thabo Ntlororo, 24, threw a rock at her car, which hit her on the head.

At the time, Ntlororo was arrested, charged with attempted murder and then later released after the charge was withdrawn.

After Hugo's subsequent discharge from hospital, she had to be placed in a care unit in Bloemfontein, and was also later cared for by her family.

Lanta Prinsloo, Hugo's niece, said earlier this week that her aunt's health had deteriorated and that on Monday she was readmitted to the Universitas Hospital in Bloemfontein where she died.

She said Hugo had been bedridden, and that organ failure and pneumonia had been the eventual cause of death.

Police captain Phume Dhlamini confirmed to Beeld that a murder docket had been opened. - Sapa
