Police are investigating a case of business robbery after suspects robbed the Belhar post office at gunpoint on Wednesday afternoon.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg said the suspects took an undisclosed amount of money.
“The circumstances surrounding a business robbery (on Wednesday) afternoon at about 1.55pm at a business premises in Sonata Way, Belhar, are under investigation.
“According to reports, unknown suspects entered the premises and threatened the staff with a firearm. The suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash and a cellular telephone. No shots were fired and no injuries were reported,” he said.
Local councillor Delmaine Cottee called on police to increase visibility in the area and said the post office had experienced three incidents of robbery just in the year.
“We are concerned about this trend. That post office has been targeted. It has been robbed three times this year already and that is really a concern for us,” he said.
This incident follows a string of other robberies at post offices around the Western Cape. In February, the Durbanville post office was robbed of R50 000 by five suspects.
Police reported that the suspects entered through the front door, threatened staff members and demanded money from them.
In January, police arrested suspects who held staff members at gunpoint at the De Doorns post office, and fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash in a VW Golf. One of the suspects later died when their car overturned in Paarl.
That same month, police also arrested four men aged between 24 and 35 after staff at the Caledon post office were held up before robbers fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money.
