Affectionately known as the "Queen Mother", a 100-year-old Strandfontein woman is just as excited as her 20 great-grand children to celebrate Christmas.

Still on a high from celebrating her 100th birthday, Catherine Damons said Christmas was her favourite time of the year.

Damons recalled how back in the day it was a time of happiness, joy and peace. “You could walk the streets without looking over your shoulder, we knew we'd be safe. Everyone respected their elders and peers.

Damons grew up in the small towns of Port Nolloth and Paternoster before her family later settled in Parow. She was later orphaned and became the head of a household of three.

She got married when she was 24-years old to David Damons and Christmas was a special time for their family.

"We had our thing in our house, bringing everyone together and sharing the gifts as the tradition we both learned from our parents. I miss those days, but I am grateful to have my children (three daughters), (nine) grandchildren and (20) great-grandchildren to share the love with," she said.

Damon’s family love to decorate their home and are planning to share gifts, go to church and share lunch together.

"It's always special. In my days as a child, we used to look forward to Christmas day or even Christmas eve. We were in bed very early so that we could fall asleep and be awakened to open our presents brought by Father Christmas while we were asleep. We listened to the Christmas choirs, the band troops and over the New Year we watched the minstrels," she added.

She celebrated her birthday on December 8, at her youngest daughter's house where she relocated due to her age.

"My mother is still very strong and healthy, she never complains of pain or anything and likes to do things by herself. She lived her life, set a good example for us and we're grateful to still have her to celebrate the good times and share stories," said her daughter, Elsabe Petrus.

She described Damons as a devoted member of the Old Apostolic Church where she's affectionately known as "Queen Mother". She's also an avid reader, follows the news and is fond of cricket.

Damons attributed her long life to being active, health conscious, obedient and prayer.
