Cape Town - The Elsies River community are mourning the death of Chevonne Adams, 7, who was knocked down by a truck yesterday afternoon - resulting to an inquest case being investigated by the Elsies River SAPS).

“Circumstances surrounding the incident are still under investigation. The investigating officer is collating all available evidence. Elsies River police registered a culpable homicide case for further investigation,” said provincial police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi.

According to witnesses, Chevonne was on her way to a brigade practice at St Andrew Church at the time. She was crossing 35 Street with her brother and other children when the truck fatally injured her.

Commenting on Facebook, Jacqueline Jantjies said: “We heard a bang, they were already over the first crossing and then the bang. The girl who was with them asked where Chevonne was. That’s when we realised she has been hit. The truck stopped and we went over the road and saw her body.

“Even I didn’t realise the smallest one was gone. I am sorry for the loss of that little baby girl. If I close my eyes, I can see it play like a movie.”

Nicolette Cupido, who said she was a friend and colleague of Chevonne’s mother, said they were at work when they heard the news, and added the mother had lost her husband last year.

“Fly high, little Chevonne. I pray to God to be their strength in this difficult time as the mother is struggling with her son, who is blaming himself as Chevonne was with him as they crossed the road."

Adams attended Matroos Holy Trinity RC Primary School, which also posted: “It is with heavy heart to inform you of the passing of one of our Grade 1 learners, Chevonne Adams. We ask that you keep the family and the entire school community in your prayers. We also ask for any small donations that can help the family in this time. RIP Chevonne Adams.”

According to Swartbooi, this is an isolated incident in that area.

He said police urge anyone with information regarding the incident to call Crime Stop on 08600 1011.
