Cape Town – The mother of the children who were declared dead in a fire at Waterworks informal settlement in Grabouw on Friday morning, appeared in yesterday morning.

This comes after she made a brief appearance in court on Friday morning and was charged with arson and the murder of her two children, aged 3 and 5.

The 32-year-old mother who can be identified as Nophethi Mbalekwa abandoned her bail application this morning, according to the NPA.

Her case will be heard on January 19 in Grabouw.

Similarly, a mother of four in Engcobo, Eastern Cape, Nomboleko Simayile who is accused of bludgeoning her four children with a sledgehammer has died.

Simayile, whose children were buried over the weekend, was also unable to receive bail on Thursday, as she collapsed before she could apply for bail.
